The Marble industry in Knoxville began in the late 1870's and really became popular in the 1890's, continuing throughout the 1920's. Several quarries were active in the city, supplying Tennessee Pink Marble to much of the U.S. Because of the popularity of the industry in Knoxville at the time, the city was nicknamed the Marble City.
Despite the decline in popularity during the 1930's, Tennessee Pink Marble still continues to be used in prominent buildings across the U.S. Major Installations include the Washington Mall, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and the Smithsonian. The National Gallery of Art's fountains were turned by Candoro Marble Company, which once ran the largest marble lathes in the U.S. The most recent installation of Tennessee Pink Marble can be seen at the Newseum in Washington D.C.

On Saturday, June 21st, at 8:00am, the 4th Annual Marble City 10 Hour Film Festival kicked off on Market Square in downtown Knoxville.
Teams spent the day frantically piecing together their three-minute cinematic masterpieces, which were screened—29 in all—at the Bijou Theatre Saturday evening.
A team of highly qualified judges worked feverishly to tabulate votes as the screening progressed, finally awarding the evening's top prize to the happy fellows pictured above, for their film "Hot S***."
